Introduction
Sectional garage doors are a versatile, attractive solution for a new garage door. Sectional doors are closely related to the roller garage doors. The major difference is that roller garage doors have a number of thin slats joined together to allow the door to roll up, where as a sectional garage door has a number of hinged horizontal panels that lift up and lie parallel with the ceiling of the garage when the door is opened. Like the roller garage door, the sectional garage opens vertically so there is no overhang at any point during the process of opening the door.
How Do Sectional Garage Doors Work
As previously mentioned, sectional garage doors open vertically, guided by fixed vertical and horizontal tracks. Once open the door will sit parallel to the ceiling of the garage. It is in effect a combination of the roller door and the more conventional up and over style door.
What Are The Advantages ?
The are some distinct advantages to a sectional door which we have briefly outlined here. This is by no means a comprehensive list but should give you a feel for what a sectional door can give you.
If you imagine how an up and over door works. The door sits in the opening and so reduces the height of the garage door. A sectional door, like a roller door, is 'guided' up into the garage away from the door opening. This will give you a few more inches which is vital if you have a people carrier with a roof rack for example.
Again, similar to the roller door, the fact there is no outswing means that you can park right up to the garage door.
The sectional doors can be manufactured in either steel or timber. These days the steel doors can be finished in a choice of colours.
Anything Else
A couple of things to be aware of are the weather protection and maintenance aspects. It is normal for the door to be draught proofed but check this with the manufacturer. Also, check that the middle of the door is strengthened to protect against sagging.
While the sectional garage doors are usually more expensive than conventional one piece up and over doors, they do offer considerable advantages as outlined above.
